Homemade noisemaking devices and circuit-bent stuff

The Coffee Can of Doom

Doomsday Sound Device (makes ticking & beeping noises), circuit-bent and housed in a plastic coffee container.

APC box v2.5, aka Mimsy Modular

A modified Atari Punk Console with a CV input built inside a nifty-shaped cardboard box. Also has a 555 chip inside wired up as a second sound source or LFO. There is a build journal of sorts with sounds from this device on my blog. Click on the image for a video. Click here for a schematic.

Phoenix Modular

This device gets its name from the fact that some of its components came from my dead ESQ-1, and many others were obtained by trading parts from the same synth. One chassis is an aluminum Eurorack-style frame, another is being built with a metal faceplate attached to a wooden base. There is an ongoing build journal with sounds from this device on my blog. I also have a 4-pole LPF built by Blue Lantern which I consider part of this modular system.

Modutronic Messmaker

A lo-tech, two-chip AM/FM synth with audio input for the AM section. Powered via 9V battery, and housed in a plastic VHS tape case. See my blog for more info, or click on the image above to see a video. Click here for a schematic.

The Lunettoid

Loid for short. Modular CMOS logic-based synth, inspired by the Lunetta concept. See my blog for more info, or click on the image above to see a video. Like Phoenix, this will be an ongoing project.

feedback pedal

Just a simple send/return loop pedal with a passive tone control in the return path.

the Dirty Cow- lo-fi amp with distortion

Small half-watt amp built in a bovine-themed tin. More info and sounds on my blog

Mossifier, Ugly Camel Edition- mixer/amp with distortion and feedback

Another lo-fi mini amp, this time built specifically for synths/noise machines. Includes a 3-channel active mixer, 2-band master EQ, feedback loop (which can be switched out with an input), and dedicated line out. More info, schematics, and sounds on my blog

ReMock+ distortion unit

Distortion box/preamp with active hi/lo shelving EQ, two distortion modes ("harder" and "softer"), and a bright/dark switch (implemented with passive filtering). The core of the distortion section is a modification of the Mockman V2.0 distortion effect by Runoffgroove- the name is a nod in the direction of the original, as well as a play on "remix", with the "+" added to indicate the addition of an EQ and "bonus features". The original unit was designed to emulate a specific use of a specific device, thus it lacked several easy-to-add features like the mode switch and input level control. Housing is a cheap Radio Shack aluminum project box. No bypass or output volume control. More info (including schematic) and sounds on my blog.

JoyScream AM- squarewave AM synth in a joystick

Two CMOS Schmitt trigger oscillators put through an AM circuit, with a passive highpass filter on the output. The oscillators are controlled with the joystick, and the filter is controlled with the throttle wheel- powered with a 9V battery. Click on the above image to see a video. Sold for parts money.

the Sorry Pawn- circuit bent game piece

Plays various speech snippets. Bends/mods include pitch control, touch points, and an output jack. More details and sound samples at my blog. Sold for parts money.

various contact mic-based stuff

Including a cylindrical tin with semi-permanently mounted mic, metal plate with temporarily-mounted mic (good for percussion, scraping, or for taping an electric shaver to for sustained buzzy noise), and an unmounted, rubber-coated mic.

TrigPulser Mini

Noisy logic synth based somewhat on the TrigPulser module in Loid. Like the original TrigPulser, it is based on the CD4093 quad 2-input NAND Schmitt trigger. In this synth, one oscillator is turning a second oscillator on and off, and the second oscillator feeds one side of one of a NAND, while a third independent oscillator feeds the other side. To translate the tech-speak, it's kind of like having a fourth oscillator which is synched to both the single third oscillator and the AM output of the first two. Click on the photo to see a video, or see my blog for more info. Sold for parts money.

Grinning Idiot distortion unit

Distortion box/preamp, again housed in a cheap Radio Shack aluminum project box. Two stages of distortion, with a passive tone stack (bass control and "tilt" EQ) between them. The first stage is switchable between harder and softer clipping modes, and the tone stack can be bypassed. No effect bypass or output volume control. More info (including schematic) and sounds on my blog.
